Atlas Ensemble is back!

Atlas Ensemble was ensemble in residence at the Oranjewoud Festival end of May. Joël Bons composed 283 Strings, a collection of 10 new pieces, which were premiered on 29 May. The ensemble consisted of 15 stringed instruments from China, India, Iran, Azerbaidjan, Syria, Turkey and Europe: 3 lutes, 3 zithers and 9 bowed strings + percussion. Over the past year Bons collaborated with the musicians via zoom, a very intense and inspiring process. On 27 and 28 May 2023 four concerts with traditional music took place at Museum Belvédère in Oranjewoud. All in all it was a very inspiring and succesfull project.

Next up is a second residency at the Oranjewoud Festival 24 May-2 June 2024. This time Bons will write a new work for Atlas winds and percussion. More info will follow. www.oranjewoudfestival.nl

The Atlas Ensemble is an intercultural chamber orchestra uniting brilliant musicians from China, Japan, Central Asia, the Near East and Europe. The ensemble presents an unheard sound world of instruments from different cultures. The repertoire consists entirely of specially commissioned works.

The Atlas Ensemble is an initiative of composer Joël Bons; the idea opens up new possibilities for colour and orchestration. Unlike the western heterogeneous ensemble in which one instrument of each family is featured, the Atlas Ensemble brings together instruments from various cultures which – whilst often originating from the same ancestor – have travelled and developed over the course of centuries. Thus, an enormous variety of instruments came into being world wide. By combining their timbres, playing techniques and traditions, beautiful and previously unheard blends can be obtained. This concept embodies the essence of the Atlas Ensemble.

The ensemble debuted in 2002 at the Berliner Festspiele and has since presented premiere programmes, an Atlas Academy and Lab focussing on the cooperation and reciprocal learning of musicians from both eastern and western traditions. A central issue – and one of great potential – is the combination of different music practices, such as oral/improvisational traditions and notational/compositional traditions. Bons received the prestigious Amsterdam Prize of the Arts 2005 for his work as artistic director of the Atlas Ensemble.

Joël Bons Nomaden (2016)

The Atlas Ensemble and renowned cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras perform the brand new Nomaden (Dutch for Nomads) under the baton of Ed Spanjaard. In this work, composed by Joël Bons, the cellist enters into dialogues with instruments from different cultures. Queyras meets musicians like the Indian sarangi master Dhruba Ghosh, Turkish Neva Özgen on kemençe, Azerbaijani kamancha virtuoso Elshan Mansurov, the Persian setar player Kiya Tabassian, Chinese sheng phenomenon Wu Wei and the Japanese sho magician Naomi Sato. Thus, a continuous stream of one hour of music forms a richly varied mosaic.
